A series of concerts conceived for the radio and transmitted exclusively on the radio.
It was and remains necessary to see the radio not only as a medium but also as art. Radio art is discordant with radio and music in their traditional perceptions. Music in particular, in its classical diffusion, does not adapt efficiently to the radio medium, because it is not designed for this medium and does not take into consideration its specificity and its paradigm.
These radio concerts have been performed and recorded live at the Radio Picnic Studio in Brussels between March and June 2018.

The Play explores the variable differences between acoustic and electronic sound, and between simulation and the unconscious, through repetition and layering. It’s a music of fictional spaces and phantom figures- a world between real and imaginary worlds. As sound material D’Hulster uses data sonification of his own photographs, recorded sounds and found footage in which the listeners becoming groping characters in another sound universe.

Dark ambient drone that I created by overlaying extremely detuned bowed electric bass with electric violin. Originally produced as a soundtrack for MYSTERIES of UB monthly immersive art film series, which takes place in the virtual world of Second Life (the audience represent themselves using uniquely customised avatars, and regularly gather together in a virtual cinema for a shared viewing/listening experience in real time).

I’m a structural biologist and musician. I forage and forge audio material from my surroundings, and integrate it with my electric violin and voice, in order to create tunes and long-form pieces for release and performance. My compositional process is mainly routed within the tradition of Musique concrète, whereby all my recordings are subjected to a rigorous process of selection, processing, magicking, to create a larder stacked with custom material which I then use to build a given piece. I’ve recently been chosen for ‘Ones to watch from BBC Music Introducing’ due for broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction.

Non-Locations are a series of works intended to mirror or imitate “natural” environments, but are completelysynthetic – somewhat familiar, but abstracted, or “not as it should be”. We hear the small clicking of insects, rustling, air ambience, etc. Through immersion into the synthetic environment while also recalling our own past sound experiences, including those of idealized environments such as we may encounter in films, wealso create a new third territory in ourselves. These Non-Locations can serve as starting points for thinking about what we consider natural or artificial, desirable or not, or places to do nothing but listen.

Benjamin Nelson is an American artist and musician currently living in Vienna, Austria. His work tends to focus on reductionist/post-minimalist, site-specific and durational practices. Often invoking hypothetical objects or landscapes through slow moving or sometimes completely static sheets of sound, Nelson seeks to reveal the motion, detail, and textures that are present within sounds that may otherwise go unnoticed.

A bitter tea kettle is a seasonal worker in a life-style cafe at The International Art Space Station that orbits Earth. It is off-season now, so she is back on Earth to have her first exhibition in the art-world. She is an aspiring mixed media artist and her pieces mainly explore motives of edibles, such as vegetables, sandwiches, cheese and ham. However she admits to feeling disappointed with how the show came out. She feels that it is too heavy and a bit stiff, perhaps due to the gravity of the context.

Emilia Bergmark is a visual artist living and working i Copenhagen. Using as her source material the narrative of the everyday, she rewraps phenomenological observations into poetic and humorous installations combining sculpture, writing, interior design, film, and printed matter.

Bergmark has a master’s degree in sculpture from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Previous education includes combined studies in art and graphic design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, with a special focus on Art and research, as well as a year of studying at, and running, the alternative education initiative ‘School of the Damned’ in London.

She was part of a magazine style program called the Eva Radio Show for several years broadcasting on the South Devon based Soundart Radio 102.5fm. 3. Expose Your Eyes- The Sleepzone Instigators

Paul Harrison – been playing around with noises since the mid-1980s since I started making my own experimental films & creating soundtracks – decided that the noises themselves created their own images so focussed more on just the sounds (without the films) from about 1988/89 onwards. I started the project EXPOSE YOUR EYES sometime in the early 1990s – mostly solo, but also working with lots of other people from time to time. A 89 years old woman sings along with the musical motif of a well know football stadium chant. Her fragile voice clashes with the physicality of the music. Here’s the representation of the fight between life and death.

Davide Tidoni is a researcher in the field of sound and listening. He’s interested in the relational dimension of listening and the physical experience of sound. With a particular emphasis on observation and intervention, he realizes a variety of works that include live performances, videos, audio projects, and workshops. He has recently completed a sound ethnography about the northern italian football supporters group BRESCIA 1911.

5. Vincent Eoppolo – God Doesn’t Play Dice With The Universe

An exploration into my beliefs on creation. 2 track fixed media acousmatic music composition realized in 2018. Created using various techniques and technologies such as analogue modular, FM and granular synthesis as well as field recordings. Recorded in my studio Eclisse. My compositions are a synthesis of various sound art traditions such as musique concrete, acousmatic music, electro-acoustic music and radio art.

My works have been presented at the New York City Electro-Acoustic Music Festival, the Bushwick Open Studio Festival in Brooklyn and at Utopie Sonore in Torcé-en-Vallée, France. Several compositions have been featured on RTE’s Lyric FM in Ireland, on Radiophrenia in Glasgow, Phaune Radio from Montpellier, France as well as Radio Art International and Passport International on CHOQ Radio in Montreal, Canada. Additionally, my work has been included in Stephane Marin’s Espaces Sonores release “North American PhoNographic Mornings”.

6. Martian Hello – Sublingual Mind Slip

Inflammatory Haircut is a bizarre, evolving world of an album by Martian Hello. Mutated electronic soundscapes are populated with manic, hallucinatory instrumentals that constantly shift and play against the sturdier backdrops. Most sounds are analog before being digitally manipulated. Conceived as a literally endless album, Inflammatory Haircut will technically never be finished and will only ever grow and mutate at random intervals in the coming years. Inflammatory Haircut is a growing world populated by truly alien forms. Martian Hello are horridus oplopanax and Zachary Zena Giberson, and are in Oregon and Texas, respectfully. They collaborate over the internet and have fun making weird, impossible music together. 7. Isaac Baggaley – James

James is the first in an ongoing series of radiophonic pieces exploring sonic portraiture. An aural memory is recorded and then dissected, filtered and mangled to create a soundscape fitting to the memory described. All sound in the piece is teased out from the original recording.

Isaac Baggaley is a Sheffield based sonic artist and sound designer. He is currently studying for a PhD at Huddersfield exploring the similarities between recorded sound and photography in their relationship to reality and the objects and scenes they represent. He has performed throughout the UK and in Europe as an electroacoustic composer and as part of the shoegaze ensemble ‘The Death of Pop’

9. Fadma Kaddouri & Isa Stragliati – Running and Getting Lost in the Sky

Fadma Kaddouri invited Isa Stragliati to a collaborative work between sound material and
word material. The poem Running and Getting Lost in the Sky, written and read by Fadma, is an ode to life for those who today are on the seas, on the roads of exile fleeing war, fear and their
consequences of dehumanization. In the poem the wind is omnipresent, it is the allegory
that manifests itself in the freedom to be in its possibilities of realization, it represents
hope. Commissioned by R22 (Morocco). First broadcast in September 2018.

Fadma Kaddouri is a self-taught artist born in the mountains of Rif in Morocco; she lives and works in Grenoble. This sound work is a sound research that will include discussion about the country Macedonia and/or continent Europe where belongs, on the political, social, cultural and historical level, but as well geographically compared to the west. Through sound we will try to bring closer some aspects of the life there, nature, politics, people, as an anthropological and sociological sound map of this south-east Europe country, presenting it as a utopia vis-à-vis the dystopian west. This work is based on a short story I published in print in Confluence Magazine (Wordsmithery, November 2018); an earlier version of the audio story appeared on the website Mind the Gap (December 2018). The story is a narrative of hopelessness in a brutal (and brutalised) world of utter darkness… but even so, perhaps out of hopelessness something new might emerge?

Brief biography: Chin Li grew up in Hong Kong but has been living in Scotland for a long time. He worked as a clinical psychologist in the NHS for many years before stopping in 2015. He now spends his time writing fiction, and has published works in Confluence, Glasgow Review of Books, Gnommero, Gutter, Ink Sweat & Tears, Litro and MAP. Occasionally he has turned some writings into audio or live performance pieces.

Here are a combination of organically structured non sequenced sound works and poems, hovering between spoken word and song. Using improvisation, field recordings and intuitive
processes for playing and recording I feel my way through, developing ongoing compositions as an expression of female experience. Themes of childhood, adolescence and fertility combine with impressions of the changing seasons, memory, along side representations of colour and the feeling of clothing on skin. These tracks together form an impressionistic and sensuous collaged soundscape. The two poems are Song of Childhood by Peter Handke and Winter Trees by Silvia Plath.

Victoria Morton is an Artist and a musician based in Glasgow and sometimes in Italy. She is
particularly interested in representing the female experience through the act of composition in
painting and in sound. Influenced by musical composition, colour perception, everyday life
alongside personal narratives, historical and cultural references, Morton’s works explore a
continuously unfolding sonic, visual, spatial and psychological experience. She was a founding
member of the art/performance groups Elizabeth Go and Muscles of Joy. She is currently a
member of the band Sound of Yell and has recently recorded and performed with Amor.

This sound collage is made from recordings of my Granny who suffered from dementia. The abstract soundscape is collected using different sources in her house after she passed away. I´m interested in capturing the physical sounds from an empty space as it reflects on a life that´s no longer present within this space. At the same time, I´m recreating these sounds that once existed.

Tian Miller is a Norwegian artist based in Oslo, Norway. She mainly works with mediums such as collages and drawing, including discarded and found textiles which she processes using different techniques, but has more recently gained an interest in making use of sound in her practice.

Orpheus Street aka Dream of Orpheus Street is both a literal and imaginary sonic walk up and down a village path in Belovo, Bulgaria in the summer of 2018. The sounds were mainly recorded in this village, Plovdiv and Sofia and Rhodope Mountains, invariably finding the Thracian traces of the Orphic traditions written all over the walls, like a number I should call. It’s a travelogue of phonographies with a psycho-babble voice-over from notebook entries about what ever took my eye on the page. You can hear the pages turning. There’s nothing there that’s not real or concrete. I played or recorded the sounds in the real-time flesh and blood meat-suit with colllage ideas cast ahead in time (some of the time at least). There are many details whose significance I am sure I have not caught up with yet. Composing means bringing everything back together and performing the same material rather differently. Playing one’s own composition reveals the both the world one lives within and the world within the person and also that one performs always on the edge of an improvisation. This piece has been conceived of as an introduction to a longer audio-book concept about my life-long fascination with shortwave radio as reflected in my Radio Wide World project which led to the long from presentation at Radius (Chicago).

Radio Aporia Libre documents an ongoing series of radiologic performances that transgress the US/Mexico Border in both physical and liminal modalities. They began with clipping a handmade radio onto the border fence, attempting to use it as an antenna. Next we made contact with repeaters in Tijuana using a ham radio with experimental antennas inspired by the agricultural writings of Rudolf Steiner. Most recently we launched a radio buoy at the border, and sent transmissions back and forth across it while at sea. The performance will document these projects and include images and live radio interactions.

Linus Lancaster (KM6VRS) is an artist, independent scholar, and amateur radio operator who teaches drawing, ceramics, and sculpture at Healdsburg High School in Northern California. He received his PhD. in art practice and soil ecology at University of Plymouth (UK). He has exhibited his work internationally and has published numerous articles in scholarly journals on art practice and philosophy. His recent work focuses on amateur radio, soil studies, performative interventions, and liminal explorations.

New Young Peers Scotland – Getting Lost

New Young Peers Scotland are a group of young unaccompanied asylum seekers and refugees living in Glasgow. With the support of their partners – Glasgow Clyde College, Ypeople, and Glasgow Social Work Department – this group has come together to create a peer-to-peer mentoring network, which supports other young people arriving alone in Glasgow, unable to speak the language.

The three pieces produced for Radiophrenia take inspiration from audio guides, aiming to give advice to newly arrived young people. These pieces also challenge the comfort and comprehension English speakers usually have, when listening to the radio in the UK – so, even if you don’t understand what’s being said, just focus on the sound of the voices.

During Getting Lost you heard:

Ian Wilson – Muckross Reverie

‘Muckross Reverie’ (2018) is the result of a 3-month residency in County Kerry in 2018. Part of my work during the residency was making field recordings in and around Killarney National Park (Muckross). Over a period of months I recorded the Torc waterfall, Muckross Lake,
the wind in the park, and many birds in the area. I have edited and processed these recordings to make a sound piece which presents the ‘natural’ sounds but also combines those sounds and manipulates some of them to create a narrative which (to me, at least) speaks about the fragility of our natural world.

Ian Wilson (composer, Ireland) has written over 200 works, including operas, a range of orchestral and chamber music, and multimedia works, which have been performed and broadcast on six continents. A full-time composer, he is also active as a performer, improviser, and conductor. He is a member of Aosdána, Ireland’s state-funded body of artists whose work has made a significant contribution to Ireland’s cultural life.

Nicola Woodham – Magickal Intent Sound Sigil version

The idea behind the piece was to create and charge a magickal sigil in voice and music. For the voice element Nicola repeats a text statement of something she desires. All the repeating letters of the statement have been erased to leave a nonsensical line of text. The melody is generated by a sine wave alphabet. Nicola had set a sine wave bass frequency for all letters A to Z, each letter of the text was translated into a sine frequency to make a sine sigil melody.

Nicola’s practice involves finding spaces for ‘social imagination’ such as in the European DIY noise scene in response to ‘business ontology’, borrowing Mark Fisher’s terms. She uses estrangement effects on her voice and pedal based noise to create unsettling others and soundscapes. These voice works appear as improvised performances, recordings, videos and drawings. She misappropriates her own anxiety states for sound-making such as sonic hyperventilation and diaphragmatic gasping. Nicola sees this action as the redeploying of the psychic and physical by-products of neoliberalism as states of excitation to stage a warding off of the control/gaze of governance.

If I were to tell you how I arrived here, I would have to explain the voicemails. The voicemails have been In the back of my mind for some time. They had accumulated over several years, in fits and starts. A waxing and waning of words spoken into the void. For months, I watched them arrive but I did not listen to them. When I eventually did hear the messages, certain things were immediately clear. The condition of his lungs was deteriorating. His breathing was laboured. The messages had never been easy to follow. They were often slurred, because of the drink. But now when he spoke his words were interrupted by coughing fits, more and more so as time went on. By groans and gasps. Belly-speech. Gurgles of outflow.

In The Absent Body, Drew Leder writes that the healthy body is ‘transparent’. In Illness, the body loses its transparency by ‘dys-appearing’. In a state of dysfunction, it appears. When I read this, something about the Idea of the loss of transparency seems familiar to me. The pregnant body is not transparent, but it’s not dysfunctional either. In fact, the cis female body is perpetually troubling this idea of transparency in health. I am not the first person to point out that the question of the body’s transparency is not as simple as it seems.

I try to listen to the groans and gasps between the words as sounds in all their electronically-mediated materiality, perhaps I am being evasive. I am finding it hard to breathe as I listen: the body impInges, despite myself. And they call this ‘reduced’ listening. The absent body, on the other side of the voicemails, of the radio. For something so absent, it weighs heavily. dissipated, dys-appearing.

Hannah Ellul is a Glasgow-based writer and artist working primarily in text and sound. She often works collaboratively, and much of her work starts from an interest in radical political imagination and the affective dimension of collective experience. With Ben Knight she is part of the collaborative project Psykick Dancehall, exploring sound across media: the politics of listening, recording technologies and the voice. She makes music with Human Heads and White Death. Projects have included residencies at Titanik, Turku, FI (forthcoming), the Banff Centre, Alberta, CA; Lothringer_13 Laden, Munich, DE, and CCA Glasgow, UK; and performances and exhibitions at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow; Lydgalleriet, Bergen, NO; Oslo 10, Basel, CH; and Castlefield Gallery, Manchester, UK.

Roy Claire Potter and Kieron Piercy take up the subject of colourblindness in Eyes Rifle. Originally produced as a three-minute response to an archived conversation on that subject from the Anthony Burgess Foundation, this new extended version similarly remembers eyes tests, but suggests something much darker in the speaker’s omissions or repetitions of information. Potter and Piercy have focused on the archival recording’s environmental indicators, its sonic interference, and on inferences in the archived conversation to inform the recording and synthesis of an audio environment that provides a subtext for the monologue, while drawing out and guiding its delivery.

Roy Claire Potter is an artist writer from Merseyside working across performance, publishing, installation and film. They have published two books of experimental fiction and are working on a third. Audio on Chocolate Monk, and FortEvilFruit with Bridget Hayden.

Kieron Piercy makes audio composition, improvisation and installation. Piercy has performed widely in the UK and Europe, as a solo artist, and founding member of duo, Spoils and Relics distributed by Chocolate Monk, Harbinger Sound, and Porta.

4. Timo Kahlen – Articulate

An uncensored dialogue. Pure sound and intonation. An homage to our freedom of speech.
In fact, it’s quite difficult to be articulate.

The work is a two-channel radiophonic version of my 2018 interactive sound & film projection “Articulate” at http://www.staubrauschen.de/articulate/ . The interactive version was first exhibited/screened at Institut für Alles Mögliche, Berlin 2018 and reviewed at Digital in Berlin Q+A, 2018. The submitted radio edit will have its premiere at Radiophrenia 2019 (if accepted).

Sound sculptor and media artist Timo Kahlen (* 1966 in Berlin) chooses to work with the ephemeral: with wind and steam, with light and shade, with pixels and dust, with sound, noise and vibration. His work has received nominations for various renowned scholarships and residencies, including the German national “Sound Art Prize“ (2006), the “Kahnweiler Prize for Sculpture“ (2001) and for the “Prize for Young European Photographers“ (1989); as well as critical recognition at more than 180 exhibitions of contemporary media art since the mid-1980s. 5. Tom Scott – North South

Southpole resonant boat. North by train facing south. Growling jet west by north east. Facing east on marsh between tracks. Each track is selected from random sequences, each presentation is different.Using Soundwalking to tease the acoustic signatures of Walthamstow’s Marches, bounded by Coppermill Lane Water Works to the north, the Lee Navigation to the south. The walk discovers the resonance of the gravel beds by the water works, traverses the train tracks, reveals the narrow boat engines reverberations in the curve of the canal wall, a growling jet bopping across the open sky, facing East.

Tom Scott has a BA Fine Art (Hons) in Film. After completing his studies in 1983 he was part of a group of artists who formed Hull Time Based Arts. Over the years of its existence HTBA contributed a dynamic to the art world, Tom Scott was a committee member until the mid 90s leaving to complete an MA in Art and Design, working with Chris Mizsak and Tony Scott under the moniker of BellArtLabs. Tom’s works have been presented at Tate Britain, Dean Clough (Halifax), Lovebytes (Sheffield) and the Wro Festival 95 (Poland) and Hull City of Culture 2018.

Inflammatory Haircut is a bizarre, evolving world of an album by Martian Hello. Martian Hello are horridus oplopanax and Zachary Zena Giberson, and are in Oregon and Texas, respectfully. They collaborate over the internet and have fun making weird, impossible music together. They haven’t met yet in real life, but it’d probably be very cool when they finally do.

7. Anna Wolfe Pauly – ideal

Anna Wolfe-Pauly, or ANNA, is a multidisciplinary artist from California. WARM ANNA is both experiences and exercises focused on expanding the listening register. With a super slo-mo sensibility, Anna leads workshops and gatherings internationally that focus on deep listening, time-based aural practices, and exploratory group sound. The core of the sonic program here is a series of exercises, Warm Ups, that display Anna’s attention to voice, to language, to listening. Unyolked from a discrete musical practice, this humble voice music is not demanding, but it commands time to unfold.

8. Simon Sutcliffe – COW

Someone once mentioned to me that they were a COW, a citizen of the world. I tried to figure out some of the other possibilities of what this could mean. Using the acronym COW as a framework for generating work, or an empty vessel to be invested with meaning, I have been making hundreds of three word haikus, creating a sort of cosmology. They are intended to be delivered orally. This was performed for the first time at “Slide/Glide” curated by David Excoffier. This sound piece is a version of this work.
  
Simon Shim Sutcliffe is a Glasgow based Canadian artist and writer. He is currently studying Sculpture and Environmental Art at the GSA, and has previously studied Philosophy at the University of Toronto. His work is guided by an interest in monocultures and diversity of social and material environments. He has worked on projects at Slide/Glide (Glasgow), Terra Incognita at Artspace (Toronto), and Eloquent Systems at the OCAD Anniversary Gallery (Toronto).

This piece is based on location field-recordings captured at an abandoned former cement plant on the Hudson River in Kingston, New York. The poetically resonant title also refers to the transitional nature of the location, and of the city itself. The composer intervened in the location field-recordings by introducing rhythmic, choreographed gestures that ‘sound out’ the space and seek to encourage an active mode of listening attuned to its varied textures and qualities.
The listener will hear underground tunnels, graffiti paraphernalia, intense wind in Eastern Red Cedars, and the crackling of late-Winter ice accompanied by percussive overlays.

(The location audio for this piece was recorded using a mid-side setup, an array that was originally developed to record for broadcast media.)

Gateway invites listeners to feel the ecological and social changes affecting the Kiewa Valley and High Country in Australia. It is created by little stories that describe the relationship between people and their environment. Gateway is a sound art project produced by the Bogong Center for Sound Culture. Benoit Bories is a radio documentary maker and a sound composer. He produces radio documentaries for France Culture, Arte radio , RTBF and RTS as well as other non-French speaking radio stations. For the last three years, he has also been creating sound creations for live performances, installations and theater. During his experiments, he has been led to establish his own formalism of sound writing, borrowing from social documentaries, acousmatic composition and sound ecology. His practice of sound writing are based on knowledge in physics (he did a phd in quantum physics), a taste for musical experimentation and a desire to confront social issues in the field of these problematics. Benoit Bories has won several international awards and nominations for his sound work.

This sound piece summarizes what happened in one of the collapsed buildings after the earthquake of September 19, 2017 in Mexico City. This work honors the efforts of fellow sound engineers, sound artists, sound designers, musicians, etc., who-equipped with professional portable microphones and recorders-supported (as a large part of the population) the rescue actions by listening and detecting possible survivors below the rubble.

A member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians from the age of 16, my Dad, Chris Skinner, performed magic in the North of England during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. My latent fascination in the presentation and craft of magic has revealed itself in my own performance practice, most recently a 2017 live-to-air performance for Radiophrenia.Retroactively documenting this ephemeral performance event, I explore in more detail the paradox at the core of the previous work; the necessarily visual medium of magic presented through the inherently auditory medium of radio.

Although I have always been interested in the display of magic I have never learned any. Over the course of a weekend at my parents home, my Dad begins to teach me the techniques of card magic.

The recordings have been handled, shaped and edited by collaborator Alexander Storey Gordon.

The PR machine hammers out “prêt-a-porter” press releases, and journalists field them.

Chantal Francoeur is a journalist, researcher and sound artist. She conducts ethnographic studies in newsrooms and analyses journalistic discourse to better understand convergence and its impact on the news. She then turns her findings into soundscapes. The four pieces presented here capture the inner turmoil experienced by journalists as they navigate the challenges of a new multi-platform universe, the stresses of ever-accelerating rates of production, the intrusion of a steady stream of « ready-to-wear » PR content that is all-to-easy to incorporate into their copy, and the questions surrounding journalistic freedom that the current media landscape brings sharply into focus.

Radio piece created for a performance at I AM NOT A FORTUNE COOKIE, ACUD Berlin
June 2018 – an event raising awareness of cultural appropriation and racism in the art scene
in Berlin, responding to racist themed parties during Berlin Art Week. Chipping Away
addresses microaggressions against racialised bodies, focussing on club door policy.
Established power structures and increased normalisation of many forms of discrimination
have caused an endemic of insidious racist behaviour in apparent ‘safe spaces’. Here, the
listeners give full attention to the voices and experiences of those affected – if only for the
duration of the piece.

Zoe Chalaux – Deshumidificateur

Chaudière (“Boiler”), Déshumidificateur (“Dehumidifier”) and Génératrice (“Generator”) are three short pieces based on the same idea (+ Frigo – “Fridge” coming soon): In the first part you hear a kind of evolving drone which is a record of the buzz produced by some electrical installation that a I hear daily. I process this record with a band equalizer in order to highlight the harmonics of the drone and play with them. For the second part, I tried to sing those harmonics and through recording and edition I navigated through those sounds.

I joined the wonderful world of art three years ago when I entered ESAAA, Annecy Alpes Experimental School of Art. Most of my work consists in videos, sound pieces and sound/text performances. I am often playing again a piece of reality that appeals to me – whether a sound, an accent, a cinema genre… Through the process of selecting and playing it with my own means, something new is created. In 2019, we created with colleagues a radio collective, Trente Minutes au Four. We’ve broadcasted three live programs through the web so far (links soon available). This collective is a way for us to experiment radio art and to share this experience with listeners.

Jamie Cooper – Ghost Dance

‘Ghost Dance’ is titled after Ken McMullen’s 1983 film and samples an interview with Marlon Brando discussing the Indigenous Peoples of america spliced with tasty LAM beats.

Cooper’s studio practice involves using creative writing to draw from a blend of source material such as science fiction films, socio-political concerns and philosophical ideas to construct theoretical “other places” from which new artworks can be generated.
He work’s across a variety of mediums to create immersive environments that mix sculptural objects often with light and sound using humour and language as mechanisms to provoke deeper critical engagement. Artificial lights are often used to create uncanny objects that resemble cultural artifacts from the real world, invoking an alternative “art” reality.

A live nonlinear, collaborative, associative sonic and word quilted rendition of the myth of Psyche and Cupid playing with the theme of transmission and distance/ nearness in the telling. Producers Karen Werner (who will be in the US on her live low-power fm radio show) and Dilsa Perinçek (who will be phoning in to the radio show from Finland) both have special connections to the myth of Psyche and Cupid and will improvise this rendition working with agreed upon sign and sound posts within the myth.

Dilsa Perincek is a writer and animator from Turkey. Her curiosity for psychology, myths, and ancient stories is where she convenes with Karen, Psyche, and Cupid. Karen Werner (Karenwerner.net) is a radio producer and sociologist based in the US. Her radio show Sketchpad is broadcast biweekly on WMCB 107.9lpfm in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Dilsa and Karen met at Saari Residency in Finland this winter.

If I were to tell you how I arrived here, I would have to explain the voicemails. The voicemails have been In the back of my mind for some time. They had accumulated over several years, in fits and starts. A waxing and waning of words spoken into the void. For months, I watched them arrive but I did not listen to them. When I eventually did hear the messages, certain things were immediately clear. The condition of his lungs was deteriorating. His breathing was laboured. The messages had never been easy to follow. They were often slurred, because of the drink. But now when he spoke his words were interrupted by coughing fits, more and more so as time went on. By groans and gasps. Belly-speech. Gurgles of outflow.

In The Absent Body, Drew Leder writes that the healthy body is ‘transparent’. In Illness, the body loses its transparency by ‘dys-appearing’. In a state of dysfunction, it appears. When I read this, something about the Idea of the loss of transparency seems familiar to me. The pregnant body is not transparent, but it’s not dysfunctional either. In fact, the cis female body is perpetually troubling this idea of transparency in health. I am not the first person to point out that the question of the body’s transparency is not as simple as it seems.

I try to listen to the groans and gasps between the words as sounds in all their electronically-mediated materiality, perhaps I am being evasive. I am finding it hard to breathe as I listen: the body impInges, despite myself. And they call this ‘reduced’ listening. The absent body, on the other side of the voicemails, of the radio. For something so absent, it weighs heavily. dissipated, dys-appearing.

Hannah Ellul is a Glasgow-based writer and artist working primarily in text and sound. She often works collaboratively, and much of her work starts from an interest in radical political imagination and the affective dimension of collective experience. With Ben Knight she is part of the collaborative project Psykick Dancehall, exploring sound across media: the politics of listening, recording technologies and the voice. She makes music with Human Heads and White Death. Since moving to London in 2017 I have found multiple musical objects on the street, including:
• a bag of cassettes containing surveillance recordings and Jamaican, Mediterranean & British pop music
• a box of classical, pop and story telling records
• a portable record player
For this 30 minute radio programme I have chopped, slowed down, looped and simply played back some of my favourite moments on these tapes and records, with the help of a sampler, a cheap FX pedal and other found objects.

Conal Blake is a Glaswegian musician currently based in London. He is 1/4 of ‘Domestic Exile’ and runs a radio show called ‘Feedback Moves’ on Threads Radio.

Imagined as a form of non-visual of theatre exploring and dramatising the history of the psychoanalysis Wilhelm Reich, this 64 minute dynamic sound collage dislocates the techniques of DJ ‘craft’ by referencing audio collage, plunder-phonics and cut-up techniques. Using dialogue, sound effects, musical selections and interludes, disruptions of form, pitch and timing, Reich’s revolutionary treatment of sexuality is illustrated, celebrated/critiqued through a rich fractured narrative sketching his revolutionary socialist politics and progressive psycho-sexual teachings.

I have been conducting a dual career-life for the last 20 years. In day light hours i work a an arts specialist PR, working across theatre, contemporary Art, dance, live music, artist releases, music festivals,and arts related consultation. I am the 10 year + established PR manager for the Optimo DJs and alongside this work have represented Gi Festival, Edinburgh Art Festival, Electric Frog, Glasgay! The Art School as worked with national press agencies including Red Bull Music.

After dark i have worked as a DJ club promoter and performer. This work has involved working across many different spaces and cultural events, from the large scale club venues like The Arches and Art School to small venues promoting hybrid events combining queer politics performance music and Art, from Djing at World Aids day events, the launch of the Edinburgh Film Festival, and in the Turbine Hall at Tate Britain. For seven years i have broadcast a weekly hour long programme on Subcity Radio. For the past two years have made the exploration of dedicated abstract sound works a deliberate part of my DJ practice.

Canadian sound artist and radio producer Julia E Dyck invites listeners to immerse themselves in a sci-fi drama in five acts. Frequency Interference explores concepts of automation, posthumanism, and the relationship between identity and voice and looks into the unexplored potential of publicly accessible sonic infrastructures.

Working with mentor Peter Meanwell, Julia E Dyck investigates the possibilities of implicating the listener in the active communal structuring and deconstructing of aural experiences. In her research-based work structured as a sonic sci-fi, Dyck addresses thematic inquiries that characterize and define the present moment: speculative identities, alternative kinships, and our connection to technology.

It’s night and you’ve been driving a long time. Heavy eyes, lights and white lines of the motorway- your mind starts its own journey- snippets of conversations, ghosts of memories, phase in and out, like analogue radio stations.

Lambada Drive is a mix of personally recorded and found audio letters, alongside content from internet archivists, all jumbled into a radio station of the mind. The voices in this piece hope to transport the listener to places and time that they may have never known, nor have travelled to, but can see vividly in their mind’s eye.

Laura is an award-winning freelance audio producer, creating sound-rich, head cinema inducing pieces for podcast, radio and art installations. She likes; field recording, rummaging in archives, digging in crates and collaging lost and found sounds and voices.

2. Lorenzo Cimino – mondo volato copia

Lorenzo Cimino is an Italian trumpet player and composer. He has taught at the University of Pisa , Conservatory of Bologna, Istituto Boccherini Lucca.He made numerous recordings on behalf of Rai and won the audition for the first trumpet in the orchestra of the Fermo Festival. He has carried out an intense concert activity, founding and working for ten years the Ensemble Giacinto Scelsi, also performing numerous compositions in the first absolute performance, many composers have dedicated pieces to his trumpet On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Dadaism he plays and writes the music of the Performance “WiTz”, the only Italian project awarded by the Dada 100 Foundation in Zurich

3. Allanah Stewart – hallway tv bedroom youtube collage

This is a collage of sounds taken from cell phone recordings scattered around my house (one outside my flatmates bedroom, one in my bedroom and one beside the front door). The rest of the sounds come from youtube videos that came up after I searched for “The sound of people sniffing their nose”

I am an artist from NZ but currently living in Australia. I run a monthly show hosted by Noods Radio which explores experimental music and its many crossovers. I love making music and eating chocolate.

4. Raphaële Dupire Loubaton – Waterlily motor

This piece plays with the images of nymphs and Monet’s water-lilies as if they could met each other. Strange walk in an aquatic and feminine world whose mystery and functioning remain intact. A poetic approach to sensuality and of various representations of the ripple.

Raphaële Dupire studied Philosophy and Performing Arts at the University of Paris X.
As an improviser, she is part of the LANDS trio (minimalist landscape music) with Anouck Genthon and Edward Williams. As a composer, she collaborates with Camille Thilloy, visual artist, in an experimental duo BOA (video/music). As a performer, she creates scores, practices choreographic improvisation. Also, she composes for live shows and regularly interprets acousmatic pieces. Her work weaves links between technical activities and artistic practices, between ephemeral constructions and music, dance and visual arts.

The Prime Directive is a sound collage compiled from various sleep aids native to YouTube. Many YouTube channels are dedicated to uploading longform drones to help people with tinnitus, anxiety and/or insomnia. These recordings can vary from idling engine noises and shopping centre muzak to pop songs slowed down by 800%. Often looped for up to twelve hours, and sampled from films, tv shows and other pop culture sources, these found sounds are analogous to videos published by the ASMR community. Originally composed as a two-hour long piece for Resonance EXTRA, this thirty-minute distillation was made exclusively for Radiophrenia.

Ilia Rogatchevski is a Russia-born multimedia artist, journalist and broadcaster living and working in London. Taking cues from insurrectionist modernists like Guy Debord, William S. Burroughs and George Maciunas his prolific output varies from painting and collage to sound installations and radio work. Appropriation plays a key role in his practice. Phrases, images and sounds are culled from popular sources, detourned and disseminated back into the public sphere with the aim of subverting the original message. Rogatchevski has performed and exhibited his work internationally. As a journalist, he is also a regular contributor to Resonance FM and the Wire magazine.

Palestinian poet Dareen Tatour was convicted by an Israeli court in Nazareth of “incitement to violence” for a poem she wrote. The prosecution demanded a long prison sentence and final sentencing was announced on Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Dareen spent a total of THREE years under house arrest and in prison, between October 2015 – September 2018. She was released on September 21, 2018 on probation with the condition that she not publish any political art work.

On November 29, 2018 she will stand before the court once again, appealing against her verdict. A group of artists and activists issued a call inviting musicians to contribute to a forthcoming digital compilation album in protest at Dareen’s conviction, called Poem On Trial.
Each musician was invited to contribute a piece of work in any genre using, as their lyrical base, the text of the poem by Dareen. The project aims to undermine and expose the true basis of her conviction by repeating and distributing her ‘illegal’ poem via the medium of music and art. Some of these new creations are featured in the radio program.

This project explores interrelationships, correspondences and diversions between sounds, sites and the digital. Cataclasis consist solely of sonic matter recorded on the islands of Harris and Lewis in August 2018. The captured sounds were then transformed over the autumn and winter of 2018, coalescing into a cycle of discrete tracks. The project is not intended to represent the locations its constituent sounds were recorded in; rather it seeks to present a series of sonic occurrences in their own right

Volker Eichelmann is a London-based artist.

In 2017 he published Gutters of Gold (Black Dog Publishing, 2017) featuring his work alongside a selection of drawings by Stephen Tennant (1906-1987). Eichelmann is Associate Professor at Kingston University where he is Director for Postgraduate Research for the School of Art & Architecture.
