  • James Wyness - And The Earth Appeared

    17th May 2019  12:40 am - 1:00 am

    programme/artist information

And the Earth Appeared is a realisation of a work-in-progress which makes use of climate change sonification data (arctic ice, CO2 mapped to glacier ablation, both historical and future projections), official UN statements on climate change, read excerpts with translations (synthesised voices) from the oral histories of Arctic communities and interviews about how climate change will or won’t affect future soundscapes.

James Wyness is a composer, radio artist and collagist based in the Scottish Borders. His compositional work, based on recorded sound and electronics, is characterised by an articulation of musical structure through the evolution of long-form dense textures. His radio work explores the conceptual and social dimensions of radio, in particular ideas around sound, silence and political constructions of voice and language, on how such constructions affect identity and how channels of communication are controlled and directed. His work has been performed, exhibited and commissioned internationally.

  • Javier Aregger- Unlearn/Pissleur

    17th May 2019  1:00 am - 1:30 am

    programme/artist information

Unlearn / Pissleur is an experimental piece juxtaposing heavily processed speech taken from commercial language learning packages. Broken up words, backwards speech and sounds are blended, creating a seemingly nonsensical ‘language training’ scenario. Using the idea of user-friendliness and overoptimistic promises made by language learning courses and apps, this soundwork immerses listeners into a learning process where they can unlearn a ‘proper’ language and instead master the art of broken words and against the grain speech.

I’m a curator, sound artist and occasional photographer based in Lockerbie and Glasgow. I’m currently studying for a Masters Degree in Curatorial Practice (Contemporary Art) at the Glasgow School of Art. I recently co-curated “Three Times Removed”, a group exhibition that examined traditionally gendered activities and I’m currently working on two further projects at the Hunterian and Project Ability. I’m also exploring the links between sound / vision and perception in the context of contemporary art, in particular through the concept of synaesthesia, ideasthesia and aesthetic atmospheres.

  • Eggblood - Your Blowing Secrets Mate - Language as a failing hard drive with an over-clocked CPU (Shortcut to Primozide)

    17th May 2019  1:30 am - 2:20 am

    programme/artist information

Following on from 2017 piece “Last brain to Tranqcentral” (pt 3 in particular). This work focuses on the correlation between Coprolalia a facet of Tourettes syndrome (shouting out obscenities) and chronic syntax error related to computational processing as a “blowing concept”. Questioning the notion of autosuggestible behavior – Philosophical reasoning for the discretions in the RAM packed non dominant area of the brain. The ensuing administered primitive and historical failing treatments, and causal effects/side effects within the human condition. Contending and/or conflicting with a cocktail of additional conditions such as ADHD, ASD or OCD. Causing Involuntary actions, vocal, audio tics and a general side chain effect within social constraints.

  • Ash Kilmartin - The Almanack of Breath

    17th May 2019  2:30 am - 3:00 am

    programme/artist information

Tutivillus, the patron demon of scribes and printers, is well documented in Medieval sermons and literature. Against this ‘Recording Demon’, The Almanack of Breath proposes a nameless, invisible and inaudible counterpart: an allegorical figure of Listening. This creature collects and donates different forms of breath to those who need it. Month by month, the ‘Seasons of Breath’ detail the type of breath – a gasp, or yawn or a sigh – that the listener should take care to hear. The Almanack of Breath is based on a book published by Other Versions. This audio version was made at Studio Klangendum (WORM, Rotterdam).

Ash Kilmartin is an artist from New Zealand who lives in Rotterdam. She makes sculpture, performance, books and other things, often about voices and the spaces they inhabit.

  • Barry Burns - 23 Minutes To Go: Commence Exuding The Opaque Vapour

    17th May 2019  3:00 am - 7:00 am

    programme/artist information

For the last five years I have taken a sample from every video I watch on my laptop. As a tip of the hat to William Burroughs and Robert Anton Wilson I take the sample from the 23rd minute. Each sample is arranged and layered chronologically, constructing an aleatory narrative, a random DJ mix of dialogue, music and foley, a self portrait of viewing habits and memory. VHS rips merge with Blu Ray restorations, youtube binges mingle with abandoned box sets.

Barry Burns is not the bloke out of Mogwai, its a different, unsuccessful one. He is the co-manager of Radiophrenia and has used his immense power to give himself the highly coveted 5am slot.

  • Shorts 19

    17th May 2019  8:00 am - 9:00 am

    programme/artist information

    1. Bláithín Mac Donnell- a concentration of cultural debris associated with human consumption
    2. Paradox Encounter Group – Ripped Tonight
    3. Soon Comes Night featuring Helen Nurse – Letter to Hamilton
    4. Discount Gnosis – remembermembermemberdismember (for ATV Television)
    5. Claire Kearns – John St
    6. Vincent Eoppolo – Voci Lontano Della Famiglia
    7. Chris Alton – Crudely Plucking The Strings
    8. Clara Lou – Clean Movie Without Light

    1. Bláithín Mac Donnell – a concentration of cultural debris associated with human consumption

The piece takes its starting point from a midden on the most westerly coast of Europe. The narrative oscillates between fact, fiction, the local and global. Through highly descriptive images of the midden’s materiality the listener is placed in the specifics of a landscape. As the story unfolds objects are revealed through the unraveling of surfaces; sand, a whale’s stomach, a skeleton in the park, maps and jewellery. This unravelling enables the listener to imagine a new space as objects, people and place come in and out of view through images in the mind.

Working with spoken word performance, my work through a one person narrative forces the viewer to remake the image within their own mind so that the space in which the story is told becomes the image. Recent exhibitions include ‘a scaffold to give it structure and a culture for it to feed from’ a narrative told in a series of tasting dishes at lítost gallery, Prague. ‘And I don’t know why they have a parrot in the garage ‘ a story told through a live performance and through printed matter at ‘The I Don’t Need To See That Fair’ Tottenham Grow, London. Performance in Bethnal Green Working Mens Club for Love Sick ‘ they generally don’t like to be alone ‘. A group show Lip-Syncing at lítost gallery, Prague where I performed ‘they covered the bald patched in astro turf ‘. And ‘ something in parts ’ performed in the snug of my family pub for Féile na Bealtaine, Arts Festival, Dingle, Ireland.

    2. Paradox Encounter Group – Ripped Tonight

Paul Harrison – been playing around with noises since the mid-1980s since I started making my own experimental films & creating soundtracks – decided that the noises themselves created their own images so focussed more on just the sounds (without the films) from about 1988/89 onwards. I started the project EXPOSE YOUR EYES sometime in the early 1990s – mostly solo, but also working with lots of other people from time to time.

See the Bandcamp for some of the people I collaborated with (Nocturnal Emissions, Lasse Marhaug, Thirdorgan, Government Alpha etc.) and some of the other people who appeared on Fiend Recordings releases: https://xemporium.bandcamp.com/

Since I’ve started up again (in about 2013) I have been enjoying putting out LOADS of sounds using lots of different names – others include Warland Drain, Paradox Encounter Group, Chapman – and more recently David Harrison, Obstacle My Arms & Egone.

    3. Soon Comes Night featuring Helen Nurse – Letter to Hamilton

I’m a writer and artist from Glasgow, with a particular interest in working with monologues and voices.

    4. Discount Gnosis – remembermembermemberdismember (for ATV Television)

As an adolescent the world of the TV thriller held me in its tawdry grip. Not only has the visual legacy 70s TV left an indelible trace upon those of a certain age but also the wonderful incidental music that accompanied such series as ‘Thriller’ and ‘Tales of the Unexpected’. A musical form that moves playfully between crass theatrical effect and a pronounced awareness of contemporary composition and orchestration. Using material sporadically recorded from TV mystery dramas of the period ‘remembermember…’ is a celebration of accidental otherness, desire and alienation.

DiscountGnostic is a vehicle for sound art, acoustic improvisation and composition projects and acts as a promoter of live events, namely Babble&Squeak, As Above, So Below and Errant Musics. As a performer I am particularly interested in the idea of ritual and memory in musical performance and the use of free improvisation as a mode of evocation. My composed works always draw upon elements from my childhood and adolescence and are frequently narrative and autobiographical. I am originally from Liverpool, born in 1957, and have been resident in London since 1981. I actively perform as an improviser on the free music scene in London and regularly attend John Russell’s Mopomoso Group and Eddie Prevost’s Workshop.

    5. Claire Kearns – John St

Ingredients of John St is an oral histories project by sound artist, Claire Kearns, produced for BCB Radio in collaboration with Wur Bradford for their Bradford markets project We Are Here. Sounds of John St. Market and the memories of stall holders have been collected and pieced together to construct an essence of the site, and the people who work there as their livelihoods face austerity and rapid decline.

Claire Kearns is a Northern British artist. Her work uses a variety of sound enabling media including assemblage, installation, performance, film and audio documentation. Kearns grew up in a working-class area of Bradford, something that would come to influence the way she uses sound in her work. Her interest in sound as an art-form grew after returning to education to study BA (Hons) Fine Art at Bradford School of Art (2006). She continued to work with sound at her local community radio station, BCB Radio (2008-2018) before studying MA Sound Arts at London College of Communication (2018).

    6. Vincent Eoppolo – Voci Lontano Della Famiglia

A work dedicated to my grandparents.

    https://soundcloud.com/societys-realization

    7. Chris Alton – Crudely Plucking The Strings

In 1607 the Bristol Channel was struck by a disastrous flood. Villages were swept away and over 2,000 people drowned. ‘Crudely Plucking the Strings’ re-stages the 1607 flood with a contemporary cast. The work’s focal point is Hinkley Point C; the yet to be completed nuclear power station, which sits on the southern bank of the Bristol Channel. ‘Crudely Plucking the Strings’ riffs on and subverts the tropes of traditional flood myths, using the form to deliver a speculative narrative regarding the interconnected nature of nuclear power, climate change and extreme weather.

Chris Alton is an artist & curator. Throughout his practice, he combines geographically and temporally distant points of reference to produce images, objects, films and events. Whether deploying disco music in opposition to fascism, recording a rhythm ‘n’ blues album about tax avoidance, or proposing art schools be built over golf courses, his work addresses the interconnected nature of prevailing social, political, economic and environmental conditions.

    8. Clara Lou -Clean Movie Without Light

A film that lacks image, built out of a series of monologues recorded on tape at varying speeds.

Clara Lou is an artist who works with sound, text, and performance. Her first solo show, The Furniture Supper Club, was presented at Motherbox Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, USA, in March of 2018. In the summer of 2018, she was funded by a Joseph Hartog grant to conduct research on loops and graphic scores in Berlin, Glasgow, Manchester, and London. This past September, she had a residency at Wave Farm in Acra, New York, where she began work on a radio play in which transmitters, cassette players, a turntable and a radio serve as both instrumentation and performers.

A few days after the UK has invoked Article 50 of the Treaty of the European Union, Lucinda Guy of Dartington’s Soundart Radio takes us on a swim through the webstream of Radio OE1: “Inspired by global traditions of wailing, keening and expressions of grief, this is an Englishwoman’s mourning for her receding European identity. • Johann Diedrick - Black Mayo

    17th May 2019  10:00 am - 10:30 am

    programme/artist information

Black Mayo is a 30-minute soundscape piece created from sonic explorations of Newtown Creek, one of the largest superfund sites and the undisputed most polluted site in New York City. The site serves as an example of what our global climate change future could look like. Environmental disasters rendered here won’t be dealt with in our lifetimes, and its unclear how much damage has erased potential futures that could have been. The piece, made from field recordings and original music, proposes what sounds might have existed here and imagines what sounds that could have existed in the future.

Johann Diedrick makes installations, performances and objects that let people play with sound. He surfaces the histories and past interactions inscribed in material and space through vibrations, peeling back sonic layers to reveal hidden memories and untold stories. He shares his tools and techniques with the public through listening tours, workshops and open-source hardware and software. His work has been presented at Somerset House (London, UK), Social Kitchen (Kyoto, Japan), Common Ground (Berlin, Germany), Knockdown Center (Queens, NY), Meisei University (Tokyo, Japan), Yale Univeristy (New Haven, CT), NYU Shanghai (Shanghai, China), and Invisible Places (Viseu and Ponta Delgada, Portugal).

  • Ian Wilson - Trace

    17th May 2019  10:30 am - 11:00 am

    programme/artist information

    • To follow or mark the course or position of (something) with one’s eye, mind, or finger.

    • A mark, object, or other indication of the existence or passing of something.
A fixed-media+improvisation work (2017) combining a specially-created soundtrack with live performance. The soundtrack of TRACE consists of recordings of places full of meaning for me – evocations of growing up, travelling, relocating. The work’s live aspect is an improvised performance by me incorporating e-guitar, electronics and sound objects, all working
together with the soundtrack to create a sonic reflection on the idea of nostalgia that is at the same time completely contemporary.

Ian Wilson (composer, Ireland) has written over 200 works, including operas, a range of orchestral and chamber music, and multimedia works, which have been performed and broadcast on six continents. A full-time composer, he is also active as a performer, improviser, and conductor. He is a member of Aosdána, Ireland’s state-funded body of artists
whose work has made a significant contribution to Ireland’s cultural life.

  • Hannah Dargavel Leafe - Fore Main Mizzen

    17th May 2019  11:00 am - 11:20 am

    programme/artist information

Fore Main Mizzen is made entirely from sound recordings taken on repeated visits to Southend-on-Sea and Sheerness both vantage points from which you can see the tops of the masts of a sunken ship that is still packed full of the high explosives it was transporting. Taking inspiration from the impending bang and the impossible task of reaching the ship the work explores the estuarine landscape through a process of recording, re-recording and re-experiencing the sites, resulting in a meticulously constructed sound piece that loops and layers, reflecting the motion of the waves and tides against the hull.

Fore Main Mizzen has been released on vinyl through Calling Cards Publishing, performed live as part of Apologies in Advance at Iklektic, London and been exhibited at CAVE Gallery in Leeds as a 6-track installation played through bespoke speakers. In 2018 I also performed at Whitechapel Gallery Presents 01, London, released a cassette tape on Sacred Tapes and installed sound pieces commissioned for the exhibition, Maj, at Maskinhuset in Sweden.

The vinyl features two locked grooves so that the process of listening reflects the unfinished
intentions of the high explosives: repeated tides, getting stuck, starting again but never reaching the ‘bang’. How long these grooves are played for is up to you. When you move the needle to continue the piece, it will be highlighted that it is a vinyl record to the listeners at home.

Phaune Radio – Tiny Tunes – Metamorphoses: Frog

Be a frog. Swim in the water and jump when you hit ground. ― Kim Young-ha

If for most living species, the metamorphosis is perfectly programmed over time, without much variation, for amphibians, it does not go that way. It seems that our frog – still a tadpole – is listening to the many chemical signals sent into the water by her direct environment and her fellows. From there, she decides to speed up or slow down her transformation to take the time to grow in the pond or jump on to the mainland. Still, when time has come to make a choice, we do not know if our tadpole flees down or hears the call from above. It’s up to her to decide. And up to your ears. From the larva to the tadpole with growing limbs – cartilage that becomes bone and gills soon lungs – to the frog that refuses to drown, here’s the bouncing story of a double life that rises. At this stage, everything is possible.

Phaune Radio is an ever-expanding world of homemade sound creations. Around here, we tickle your imagination. Around here, things that cannot be possibly taken seriously can still give food for thought. Around here, that’s up to your ears. Every month, it’s also a podcast that is produced for you and the curious waves of more than a dozen radios.

  • Stevie Jones - Can We Try That Without Sound?

    17th May 2019  12:30 pm - 1:00 pm

    programme/artist information

Radio broadcast offers a unique opportunity to subvert hierarchies of theatre (which prioritise text and performances) and theatre production (where lighting & set design are foregrounded.) Can We Try That Without Sound? is a radio play without words, embracing sound design and theatre composition decontextualised and severed from a script and the physicality of the stage, allowing an unprescribed narrative to emerge.

Stevie Jones is a Glasgow based composer and sound designer. Recent theatre work has included Richard III (Perth Theatre), Arctic Oil (Traverse Theatre) and MIANN (Scottish Dance Theatre). Film work has included Where You’re Meant To Be, Chicago & Athens Film Festival Documentary of the year 2017. Two slightly mismatched friends accidentally leave on a device that destroys the world. It’s funny. It’s chaotic. It’s FUNNOTIC! Also, a cucumber (as you may have guessed, and which I am certain that I do not need to say to you) is without a doubt most definitely not a drill.

She has been researching techniques to amplify slate, using rocks and geology as a sound source.

    4. Aume – Transmission (Part I)

CQ CQ refers to the shortwave radio abbreviation for “calling any station”. This theme came about from a disillusionment created by the overwhelming amount of information being transmitted. That any individual voice falls on deaf ears in the midst of a maelstrom. That one is never more isolated than when everyone is talking at the same time. 5. Isabella Streffen – The Narcissus, The Pomegranate 1

All of the things that stories conceal: they seem to lead one way, but actually lead another. They are never about that thing you thought they were about. Our listening bends one way, and meaning slips along quite another path. Fabulae : How It Begins is a re-reading of classical mythology, with Roberto Calasso as an intimate guide. It is part of a series of recent works that expand ideas about site-specificity to include texts. This seven-minute extract The Narcissus, The Pomegranate thinks about consent on the mythological plane, and speaks to the serialisation of epics in radio history.

Isabella Streffen is an artist who creates encounters with heritage sites through the intersections of art, literature and technology. She has illuminated Hadrian’s Wall from end-to-end, flown prototype drones inside the Library of Congress, camouflaged tourists in Monet’s garden, chased phantoms around the Palais Garnier, followed Sophie Calle to Venice, performed in cabaret en unicorne and gifted golden fruit to the deserving. She has a monthly column GardenLust with MAP Magazine, is a contributing editor for non-fiction at 3AM, and co-editor of The And Or Project. She moonlights as a writer, and is lectures at the University of Lincoln.

    7. Jim Cheff – Mary Farfisa discusses John Cage

Mary Farfisa is about an eight-year-old spacegirl named Mary Farfisa, who travels the Universe looking for songs and sounds and music and noise. It’s like a cartoon you listen to, rather than watch. The art and illustrations for the show are done by myself.

The show has been airing every Saturday morning on our community radio station, KSZN, here in Flagstaff, Arizona. It’s performed by local actors and musicians, and fully produced with original music and sound effects.

You can find out more about the show at facebook.com/maryfarfisa. There is also a full page of episodes at mixcloud.com/maryfarfisashow.

    8. Gabriele Stera – The land-whale – essay of experimental museology

The land-whale – essay of experimental museology is a radio work about the bigger and more incredible animal existing: the Museum. The piece explores the life and behaviour of the Museum, giving important information about it’s relations with human beings. It also provides a unique sound-recording of the Museum’s digestive process, introduced, explained and commented by three museology experts (Alice, Jenna and Tracy) and John, a visitor.

Gabriele Stera (02/04/93 – Trieste, Italy) is a poet, performer and sound artist living and working in Paris. His work is based on a multimedia and technologic approach to poetry performance, mixing words and music as elements of a wider « sound-writing » field of experimentation. He performs regularly with free and noise musicians in France and Italy. His first audio-book Dorso Mondo will be edited by Squi(libri) in 2019. His academic research is centred on the meaning and use of interference in contemporary writing and sound art.

    9. Lia Mazzari – Greenwich Clocktower

Corridors: Using sound as a tool to investigate space and place, I have made a series of site-specific responses and sonic interventions using cello and whips in a variety of unused spaces and inconspicuous locations around London and internationally, this one being recorded in the old staircase of the GreenwichTown Hall by Andrzej Jas in South East London, Oktober 2017.

Lia Mazzari is an artist and musician working with cello, whips and prepared objects. Her work as performer is often collaborative combining diverse instruments and sound objects, engaging new audiences through encounters with art in non-conventional spaces. She creates live and recorded events that embrace the broader sense of sound in space and the relationship with its environment. The importance of site and developing an extended technique with cello, whips and other localised objects at hand form the crux of her creative practice. She’s the founder of Silver Road and performed with Sholto Dobie, Ashley Paul, Takahiro Kawaguchi, Ilan Volkov.

  • Benjamin Owen - Accord

    17th May 2019  2:45 pm - 3:00 pm

    programme/artist information

Accord is an audio work using live soundtrack to radically reframe live-recorded interviews with an ageing community.

The starting points for this work were conversations with residents of Mildmay Care environment in Central London. Recorded within the rooms of Mildmay, the interviews unfolded as a series of ultimately unexpected portraits, where the presence of musicians improvising within the recording procedure unsettled the relationship between form and content.

Following two years in residence conversations were compiled into a contrapuntal installation and collection of film and soundtrackgenerating adrifting portrait of discord, harmony, memory and improvisation.

Owen’s work explores politics as it is played out in the everyday and in the commonplace. Owen has previously worked within care environments, women’s institutes and with various collectives of musicians and artists. He has made experimental films that use live soundtrack to reframe interviews of ageing communities, and arranged gigs that challengethe nature of relationships between music, sound and the body.

Although his work often takes the form of film, his practice encompasses exhibition making, performing gigs and education. He generally works as a schoolteacher and lives in Glasgow.

  • Mellon Charles - live broadcast

    17th May 2019  3:00 pm - 3:30 pm

    programme/artist information

Mellon Charles present a Dialling, broadcast live from the site of the UK’s first proposed spaceport at A’Mhoine, Sutherland.

Mellon Charles is the dialogue of transient spirits with a spacetime in common. Conversations are initiated by core members Dixon, LARK and Zurowski through a process known as Dialling.
Dixon and Zurowski invite members of the present (animal, elemental, mineral or vegetable) to
express themselves through electronic tone. LARK, acting as medium, enters a trance channel
to then convey the resultant cacophony back to the assembled members in the form of music.

Carrying out a significant amount of fieldwork in the Highlands of Scotland, Mellon Charles
functions as an off-grid collective. Our DIY sound system and audio response kit implement
renewable energy sources as a means of powering and controlling audio performances. Mellon Charles seek methods to activate acoustic ecologies and landscapes through this audio practice, finding alternative means to understand sites by utilising environmental feedback, sonification, field recording and live manipulation of incoming audio/voltage data. In these performances (known as Diallings), direct inputs from the site via a variety of sensors and live sampling techniques influence and effect the music that is produced; space becomes an active participant within each Dialling.

For Radiophrenia, Mellon Charles propose to carry out a live dialling at a site of specific interest: the location of the U.K’s first proposed Spaceport in A’Mhoine, Sutherland. The site is located on a blanket bog and is currently at the centre of an argument between local residents, crofters, the Highland and Islands Enterprise, the UK Government, Orbex and Lockheed Martin. By dialling this space, we hope to animate and make audible the vast and still ecosystem there. Our core approach to music production will be influenced by the current narrative of A’Mhoine: the friction and destabilisation of space there elicits an intriguing and uncertain response.

  • Ash Kilmartin - The Almanack of Breath

    17th May 2019  3:30 pm - 4:00 pm

    programme/artist information

  • N. Adriana Knouf - A Trans Woman Reads the Harvard Sentences, With Necessary Modifications, or, Finding Occult Queer Futurities

    17th May 2019  4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

    programme/artist information

Trans-women who want to develop a higher voice during transitioning must undertake an arduous process of vocal training, as taking estrogen does not raise the pitch of their voice (while testosterone will naturally lower the voices of trans-men). Trans-women must practice on sentences that mimic their spoken language, and there are a variety of sentence lists that can be found online. Here I read from the 720 “Harvard Sentences” from the 1960s, originally used to test telecommunications equipment, and modified by me to transpose misogynist phrases about women into queer futurities.

    N. Adriana Knouf (she/her/hers, sie/hir/hirs) is an Assistant Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA. She is a media scholar and artist researching noise, interferences, and limits in media technologies and communication.

Her recent book, *How Noise Matters to Finance* (University of Minnesota Press, 2016), traced how the concept of “noise” mutated in the sonic and informatic domains of finance. Her current research project, entitled *The Xenology Notebooks*, is a transmedia, transdisciplinary corpus expansively considering the “xeno”. Her current artworks explore the re-presentation of signals from the cosmos and the sonic exploration of queer futurities.

  • skitter - The Gaudy (o berrante e o canto do carro de boi)"

    17th May 2019  5:00 pm - 5:30 pm

    programme/artist information

An audio portrait of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the currently imprisoned ex-president of Brazil… a layered collage of various (online) Brazilian sources including Lula wire-tap telephone conversations released into the public domain by the prosecuting judge during his trial. A landscape of coincidences and confusions: the “moda de viola” songs, the ox-cart, the sound of the horn; connected to cattle and the whole meat-processing scandal; from similarly humble roots… a man of many contradictions; playing on a rural sentimentality, he had his hand in the pot, but it’s a thinly-veiled vendetta, as I’m sure you are aware. He had to be taken out.

“In those days too, often along the roads that led through the fazendas, you could hear the thunder of hooves and see the dust long before the coming of the boiada, a cattle drive. Then the boiadeiro on the lead mule would appear, his berrante slung over his shoulder. I had seen berrantes hung on walls before, but not until then had I heard the zebu’s fierce, wild lowing as it issued from the curved cow’s horn pressed to the boiadeiro’s lips. A lowing that could only be achieved by someone who understood the sound, tormenting and hypnotic, that drew the herd onward through the day.” page 19 (The Frontier’s Edge)

Maria Fusco – Legend of the Necessary Dreamer 9:Legend of Marquez (8:00)

“a new classic of female philosophical writing” Chris Kraus

Legend of the Necessary Dreamer is an ambient novella, a multi-sensory essay, an excavation of the historic Palácio Pombal, a work of impatience and death. Edinburgh Leisure – Trapped In Ikea

A new live performance commissioned by Radiophrenia will premiere on Friday 17th May: http://radiophrenia.scot/live-to-air-performances/

Edinburgh Leisure is the partnership of Farquhar and Fraser.

Keith Farquhar is an established visual artist whose work has been exhibited internationally. He is also the former vocalist of The Male Nurse, sister band to Country Teasers, best known for their two Peel sessions of 1997 & 98.

T Fraser is one half of the duo ******** (newly released on Domino Records’ imprint Weird World), a collaboration also known as [Fraser, Ormston], which featured at Counterflows 2019 and includes artist Ailie Ormston.

Since 2016, Edinburgh Leisure have recorded two albums, Die Gefahr im Jazz (due on May 17th) and Contemporary Art In Digital Culture. Recorded mostly on iPhone 5s, Die Gefahr im Jazz merges the avant-instrumentation of staple guns and ripped masking tape with Apple-hack sounds to create what the duo playfully describe as ‘a harmonious cacophony of mammal and machine processes’. Contemporary Art in Digital Culture sees their sound become more mechanistic as gym and university timetables as well as non-verbal vocal scores by Meredith Monk are fed through text-to-speech software in eccentric data-sonification experiments.

Edinburgh Leisure have performed live in various venues, from an infamous show in an Edinburgh Tenement stairwell to galleries and club spaces including Cabinet Gallery, London, Talbot Rice, Edinburgh and High Art, Paris. A solo exhibition of their visual art was held at Celine Gallery, Glasgow in 2018.

“There is a certain aesthetic ambience that Edinburgh Leisure taps into and adapts to its own ends – A carefully honed brand of realism. The group takes its name from a trust operating sport and fitness facilities in Edinburgh. Adopting the banal in-house graphics of this organisation and others like it, Edinburgh Leisure holds up a mirror to the semiotic landscape of contemporary Scottish life.” Neil Clements

George Albaster is a concept. He is a 1980s teen avant-garde turned mainstream horror movie star from Fenwick, Ayr. George catapulted into the mainstream after appearing in the 80s/90s hit trilogy “Atheist Cop”, famous for its controversy surrounding holy war. Excessive drug use and failed rehabilitation attempts ensued. Before he knew it he was watching Marlon Brando’s daughter throw herself from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Following a 4 year disappearance, he returned to write and direct the acclaimed Netflix TV series “People of the Canyons”, now in its seventh season.

The interview that Radiophrenia aired last year contained George’s confession of “The Lost Years” – a self inflicted hiatus spent away from the media limelight, during which George fell within himself, tackling his own demons whilst recording his thoughts. These are some of those recordings, against a backdrop of the droning noise George’s own mind reverberates in an infinite-delay feedback loop.

George Alabaster was imagined by long standing friends Bruce McClure (District Nurse, Seed Records) and Mark Hume (Autocrat, Mark Zoom). The chain of thought prose was recorded in early 2019 near Joshua Tree, California where Bruce spent time with Bill Pulman’s daughter. The remainder of George’s thoughts will be contained in a free cassette, sellotaped to the comic book series of Atheist Cop (created by independent artist Doktor Geraldo (Comixcentral)).

    3. Pete Stollery – Resound

During 2005, I made a large number of field recordings in Aberdeenshire finding sounds which refleced the character of the area, its people and its environment. I also interviewed a number of people talking about sounds, particularly sounds which no longer exist. I found that people became quite animated, trying hard to recreate the sounds using the English language or resorting onomatopoeia.

In Resound I have taken portions of these interviews and placed them on top of a montage of field recordings made during 2005 – so we get, for example, sonic memories of threshing machines accompanied by the contemporary sounds of approaching combine harvesters.

Pete Stollery studied composition with Jonty Harrison at the University of Birmingham, where he was one of the first members of BEAST in the early ’80s. He composes music for concert hall performance, particularly acousmatic music and more recently has created work for outside the concert hall, including sound installations and internet projects.

In 1996, along with Alistair MacDonald, Robert Dow and Simon Atkinson, he established the group invisiblEARts whose aim is to perform acousmatic music throughout Scotland and to promote Scottish acousmatic music to a wider audience, both within Scotland and abroad. He is also Chair of the sound festival, Scotland’s annual new music festival.

    4. Aume – Disintegration (Part IV)

CQ CQ is full of vocal transmissions, most of which are indecipherable. They are failed attempts at communication. They are transmissions that lead to the disintegration of human connection and understanding.

  • Live-to-Air: Félicia Atkinson / Hanna Hartmann / Edinburgh Leisure

    17th May 2019  7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

    programme/artist information

Three performances broadcast live from the theatre at Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts:

Félicia Atkinson – Waking Up in Arcosanti
Hanna Hartmann – Lost Lines and Crush
    Edinburgh Leisure – So Ambitious

Waking Up in Arcosanti is a new sound piece for voice, electronics and keyboards by Félicia Atkinson inspired by short stay in Arcosanti, Arizona, in 2017, the utopian city created by architect Paolo Soleri.

Parisian-born artist Félicia Atkinson’s multifaceted work embraces improvisation, science-fiction, composition, chance, noise, abstraction and poetry. Her sound palette draws from the history of electronics, musique concrète, field recordings and improvisation through the use of synthesizers, guitar and piano, abstract distortions, text-sound and infra bass.
Félicia’s recent album ‘Hand in Hand’ has generated a great deal of curiosity, excitement and intrigue, with Fact Magazine writing that Atkinson takes “the dying bleat of obsolete technology, the crack and stutter of her own voice, the atonal clatter of intuitively-played instruments – and sculpts them into flawless vignettes that lodge themselves deep in the psyche. Like the dystopian science fiction it references, Hand in Hand is bewitching, intense, meditative and at times, deeply unsettling.” She also runs the experimental music label Shelter Press with Bartolomé Sanson.

    Hanna Hartman will present:

LOST LINES solo for amplified objects

CRUSH Commissioned by Sveriges Radio 2018 and will be released by the Fireworks Edition label in June.

    1. Nicolas Hermansen – D-day(s)

A sound composition made entirely with field recordings of the delta del Ebre region in Spain.
It’s a reflexion on the near impossibility of having a pure, unpolluted of any human kind activity, soundscape.

    https://soundcloud.com/nhaudio

    2. Kala Pierson-Tran Phu Layers

An unprocessed field recording I made on Tran Phu Street in Hoi An, Vietnam. This is a pure recording without any human intervention other than choosing its outer fade-in and fade-out points; the name comes from my appreciation of the environment’s natural layers as a river of foot, bike, moped, and hybrid-bakery-contraption traffic. (The repeating recorded announcement in the recording was from a speaker on top of a large wheeled glass and metal box displaying baked goods for sale, an example of the ultra-local ‘broadcasts’ often heard in Hoi An.)

Kala Pierson is an American composer and sound artist. Vivid, expressive, and full of bold colors, her music has been performed in more than 30 countries on six continents, widely awarded and commissioned, and published by Universal Edition. She’s held season-long composer residencies with American Opera Projects, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, and San Francisco Choral Artists. With deep interests in non-western musics, she’s initiated many cross-cultural projects. Born in 1977, she studied composition at Eastman School of Music and now lives in Philadelphia with her spouses and son.

    3. Samuel A.D. Martin – Strings

I live and work as a sound artist in Copenhagen, Denmark. My work can best be described as experimental soundscapes in collage form, where the radio as a medium, in terms of samples, concept and sound characteristics is featured extensively.
The effect of my music being played on the radio is something that I have always had in mind when producing it, in the way I imagine it would effectively blur the line between live broadcast and produced recording, as it uses radio samples both from the past and the present.

    4. Tom Fisher – Sighting

Listen to the sounds of a sighting.

A rarity bringing disparate people together.

A quest to glimpse the spectacle.

To be listened to in a darkened space with little chance of seeing.Often working under the moniker Action Pyramid, Tom Fisher’s projects vary from sound installations and headphone pieces for galleries and museums, to experimental radio and commercially released music.
His work focuses on examining the themes of landscape, environment and peoples relation to the ‘natural world’. His work has been featured in galleries including the Tate Modern and Tate Britain, the Grant Museum For Zoology, on Resonance Fm, in the Fjuk Art Center and Husavik Whale museum in Iceland. He also writes and performs music as a member of the band Ilk, with releases on Accidental Records in collaboration with producer Matthew Herbert.

Using field recordings accumulated over many late-nights in Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street this piece endeavours to define and ultimately distort the sound of toxic masculinity – distorting it in such a way that the inherent aggression of these sonic outbursts begins to evolve into a soundscape that intrigues and ultimately beguiles the listener. There is a latent beauty in these sounds that can be explored from a safe distance. The recordist was not at a safe distance and hence had to run away quite frequently.

The narrative of the piece is based around the recordist’s journey from his flat just off Sauchiehall Street to a local shop around the corner where he intends to purchase a pint of milk. The recordist brings a Tascam hand-held audio recorder on this journey. This is his interpretation of the experience.

Ronan Breslin is Programme Leader of Glasgow School of Art’s MDes in Sound for the Moving Image. Ronan is also a co-owner of La Chunky Sound Studio based in Finnieston, Glasgow.
