Non-Locations are a series of works intended to mirror or imitate “natural” environments, but are completely synthetic – somewhat familiar, but abstracted, or “not as it should be”. We hear the small clicking of insects, rustling, air ambience, etc. Through immersion into the synthetic environment while also recalling our own past sound experiences, including those of idealized environments such as we may encounter in films, we also create a new third territory in ourselves. These Non-Locations can serve as starting points for thinking about what we consider natural or artificial, desirable or not, or places to do nothing but listen.

Benjamin Nelson is an American artist and musician currently living in Vienna, Austria. His work tends to focus on reductionist/post-minimalist, site-specific and durational practices. Often invoking hypothetical objects or landscapes through slow moving or sometimes completely static sheets of sound, Nelson seeks to reveal the motion, detail, and textures that are present within sounds that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Gavin Fort is an award winning sound recordist and engineer/producer. He has been working professionally with musicians, artists and actors both in the recording studio and on location since 2004. After graduating with a 1st class honours degree in Popular Music from Edinburgh Napier University, Gavin worked in a professional recording studio from 2004 until its closure in 2015. During that time he went on to complete an MSc in Sound Design from The University of Edinburgh and became a Certified User of Avid Pro Tools. He has worked on a wide range of audio projects from punk albums to instructional horse riding audio books to interactive multi-media hospitality training platforms.

his work focuses on the composition of electro-acoustic music on fixed medium,the creation of sound installations and on improvised live electronic and mixed music. it involves intermediary positions, in the composition of systems that can produce aesthetic results, the composition of sound, the creation of musical material and in spatialization of the musical material. his work is influenced by characteristics of the various environments of sound that surround us in our every day existence, by the systematic relationships between humans and sonic environments and by ideas about structuring and form.

This piece is part of a radio series where we invite someone to take us to a place significant to them. We explore the location together, making recordings of our conversation and the landscape. In the studio we weave together the recordings with live improvisation and layered sounds in keeping with the atmosphere evoked by the original walk.

For this show we met Ingrid Plum, Sound Artist, Improviser and Composer, who took us on a walk suspended between sea and sky, heading east along the coastline from Brighton to Saltdean. The show features tracks from Ingrid’s albums ‘Plangent’ and ‘Taut’.

Born in 2015 out of a love for the outdoors, Postcards from the Volcano is a series of sporadic live radio shows focusing on the poetics of landscape, nature and space in relation to the human, interweaving conversation and on location pre-recordings with spoken word pieces, sound art, sonic experiments, sound collage, classical, contemporary, folk and many other forms of music.

Postcards from the Volcano also perform live utilising text and alternative scores, featuring spoken, taped and manipulated voice, found objects, object resonance and other sonic eccentricities.

1. Raphaële Dupire Loubaton – Topologies de la limite

Topologies est une pièce tripartite. La naissance de cette trilogie a été guidée par une réflexion autour de la notion de seuil. C’est une exploration des espaces sonores aux limites du son, du spectre et des espaces d’écoute. Vertige des hauteurs, c’est l’espace exigü du haut du spectre, les pentes desquelles on glisse du silence dans l’audibilité. La pointe intérieure sur laquelle on se dresse pour écouter. Le point qui se tend dans l’oreille pour mieux ouïr. La matérialisation du tympan comme lieu de l’entendu. Vallées basses, au contraire, enveloppe le corps entier comme lieu de résonance. Le lieu d’écoute s’étire à mesure que le spectre s’ouvre et le tient dans une masse à hauteurs confondues. A la rencontre de ces deux extrêmes l’on se trouve dans l’ Espace lié de l’Horizon.

Raphaële Dupire studied Philosophy and Performing Arts at the University of Paris X.
As an improviser, she is part of the LANDS trio (minimalist landscape music) with Anouck Genthon and Edward Williams. As a composer, she collaborates with Camille Thilloy, visual artist, in an experimental duo BOA (video/music). As a performer, she creates scores, practices choreographic improvisation. Also, she composes for live shows and regularly interprets acousmatic pieces. Her work weaves links between technical activities and artistic practices, between ephemeral constructions and music, dance and visual arts.

2. Jack Mills – Miniature Action Sequence

The work is made using a collection of found sound recordings I made in my old bedroom in Fife with various processing techniques applied to try to create an interesting listen. It uses multiple layers of repetition, aiming to create a sense of rhythmic complexity without a distinguishable grid structure.

I’m from Scotland but have ended up living in England for work. I make experimental music when I can and have never done anything with this file.

3. Anselm McDonnell – Crossing the Firth

Crossing the Firth manipulates vocal materials derived from a single plainchant melody and its spectral analysis. The plainchant was sourced from the Inchcolm Antiphon, a collection of Scottish chants used in the Abbey on Inchcolm, an island in the Firth of Forth. The piece explores interaction and dialogue over great distance or insurmountable barriers, hence the notion of crossing. By using references to sacred music and the ethereal effects produced by extreme reverb, the work reflects on the changing terrain of Inchcolm due to erosion and uses this as an analogy for Scotland’s distancing from its spiritual past.

Anselm McDonnell is a Northern Irish composer based in Belfast. His instrumental and choral works often integrate extended techniques and theatrical elements such as vocalisation or stage directions alongside more conventional writing to increase the dramatic impact of the work. His music has been performed in Japan, Russia, France, Czech Republic, North America (New York) and various locations around the UK and Ireland.

4. Bobbi Cameron – keep that blood sugar up, honey

How can we imagine and build a queer sex space dedicated to the desires of women and non binary people? This work is a one-take live recording from a workshop with women and non binary people based in Glasgow. Together we explored different ways that we could
answer this question and build a utopic space dedicated to our desires.

Bobbi Cameron is a queer artist based in Glasgow. Her work is concerned with materiality and using acts of queering (often sound based) to dismantle and disrupt normative confinements of space, place and both constructed and bodily architectures. 5. Abby Lee Tee – Simulacrum VIII-XIV

“Imaginary Friends I” draws immersive little pictures of (re)imagined places and their inhabitants, or rather, the other way round. While imaginary companions are still mistakenly associated with deficits or even mental health issues most of the time, researchers say that they can be an important way to develop creativity and coping skills, not only for children. Beside bedding your cuddly toys for the night, it just feels natural to build them a sonic home too, twisting everyday-life sounds as well as acoustic instruments and arcane field recordings, always exploring the boundaries of human perceptions of nature and artificial worlds. Expect obscure soundscapes full of grunting hedgehogs, squeaking otters, sizzling electric fences and whistling water kettles.

7. Kala Pierson-Metallic Focusing

Metallic Focusing is a concert version of audio I made for installation in an exhibit of metal artifacts at the Naughton Gallery of Queens University Belfast. Structured in four long arcs of sound, over the course of five minutes, the piece is made from layers of minimally processed piano-interior sounds (scraping, bowing, tapping, and dragging wooden objects along piano strings).

Kala Pierson is an American composer and sound artist. Vivid, expressive, and full of bold colors, her music has been performed in more than 30 countries on six continents, widely awarded and commissioned, and published by Universal Edition. With deep interests in non-western musics, she’s initiated many cross-cultural projects.

8. Marco Dibeltulu – Microclima III

The piece was commissioned by the Amici della Musica di Cagliari that wants to keep the identity sound of Sardinia, by recording the sounds of the “Festa di Sant’Efisio”, the most important religious procession on the island. This work is dedicated to “Traccas”, carts decorated with work tools in the fields and typical products of Sardinian gastronomy, pulled by oxen and with on board men, women and children dressed in traditional clothes that sing the typical religious melodies. The piece let the listener to live the experience of the feast only through the sounds.

We are Archivosonoro (Soundarchive) from Chiapas, Mexico. The team are Gabriela Guadalupe Barrios García and Carlos Emilio Ruiz Llaven. Las latas de Don Renato (Don Renato’s Thin Cans), is about short stories (1 minute long) tell told only with sounds, no talk, no spoken word in any language. Mary Farfisa is about an eight-year-old spacegirl named Mary Farfisa, who travels the Universe looking for songs and sounds and music and noise. It’s like a cartoon you listen to, rather than watch. The art and illustrations for the show are done by myself.

The show has been airing every Saturday morning on our community radio station, KSZN, here in Flagstaff, Arizona. It’s performed by local actors and musicians, and fully produced with original music and sound effects.

Lucrecia Dalt is a Colombian born musician, sound artist and radio producer now based in Berlin. Because all the stars are not in the sky, some are to be found at all depths of the oceans. First, diaphanous larva at the mercy of the currents, our starfish soon begins to decant to the ocean floor, until it hits bottom. Once there, she begins her metamorphosis into a juvenile star. That is to say that a second body, literally, grows up inside, to reach maturity. A new symmetrical form, with 5 arms, of a different phylum, then exists simultaneously inside the larva. The starfish eventually extricate itself to become the cloning and regeneration renowned specialist, while the larva continues to graze algae and navigate quietly on the abyssal plain. Drifting products and vertigo of a life in two parallel bodies, in 6 minutes flat. On this stage, everything is possible.

A fragment of a collection of news headlines and subheadings from newspapers and magazines collected since 2011. These appropriated texts indicate relations between humans and other animals, involving sinuous relations between fiction and fact. I’m interested in the absurdity (and the humor) of the announcements, as well as making visible/audible the evident anthropocentrism of some of the news. This sound version of the work was presented for the first time in the exhibition LostandFound: Imagining new worlds, curated by Raphael Fonseca at the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore, in 2019.

Commissioned by Radiophrenia with the support of Creative Scotland.

Almost there. was constructed using vibrators that are sonically controlled and some very trusting contributors. Over two years, these contributors recorded their voices, while masturbating with the vibrators. The audio they were using was composed by myself specifically for this project. Ten participants were included in the project, with a mix of genders and sexual identities. The vibrators pulse in time with the sounds that are being sent to them. The participants made sounds in response to, and in time with, the sounds being heard. These ten recordings were then synchronized to the original composition, and mixed back into it.

Todd Anderson-Kunert’s practice functions across performance, releases, and installations. Common to all is the use of electronic sound, focussing on timbre, frequency and emotion. He enjoys intensities, as much as he enjoys silence. He is currently based in Australia.

1. Peter Hawkey – Beneath master

What begins as a C major chord twists unexpectedly as tones from the harmonic series are randomly selected and used to create new triads. The order of the chords was decided with a 12 sided die, however the voicings of the chords was up to the composer to allow a balance between chance and order.

Peter Hawkey is a guitarist and composer who works with many styles of music. Although beginning his musical career as a rock musician, Peter has recently finished his second classical guitar album. Various pieces of his music have been played on several radio stations in the UK; performed in New York and Boston; and used by a UK sporting venue.

4. Jenna Collins – We Are The Road

In 1987, Stewart Brand wrote an evangelical account of the MIT Media Lab in which he asserted, ‘If you are not part of the steamroller, you are part of the road’. In this brutal formulation, the producers of technologies (the steamroller) are active and the consumers (the road) are passive. ‘We Are the Road’ considers the position of the viewer and occupies the space of ‘the road’ through a series of sequences; imaginative expansions of situations in which filmmaking and its spaces, activities and histories register as a defining presence; and of electrical and computer industry archival materials that relate to moving image and recording technologies, accumulating into a collage of unreliable recollections.

It was my wife who pointed out to me that I tend to fidget with objects for long periods of time. Feeling, manipulating, figuring them out as if touch were the only sense available to me. The resulting sounds tend to annoy her after some time. It was this vice that became the germ for this piece. Sound sources include a bicycle, foam, paper, metal water canteen, bicycle helmet, a lamp, and my wedding ring taped on a number of different surfaces.

Robert McClure’s music attempts to discover beauty in unconventional places using non-traditional means. His work has been featured at festivals including NYCEMF, Beijing Modern Music Festival, ISCM, TIES, SEAMUS, and ICMC. His works may be found through ADJ•ective New Music LLC, Bachovich Music Publications, Resolute Music Publications, and Tapspace Publications as well as on the ABLAZE and Albany Record labels. Robert received his doctorate from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Robert has previously held positions at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Soochow University in Suzhou, China. 7. Elina Bry – Stand By Me

You might have seen her using her heartbeat as a tempo. This time no beat but hazard breaking through these overheard words.

Elina Bry is a Glasgow based multidisciplinary and collaborator who considered herself as French/Finnish both equally. Communication is an essential part of her practice as each medium and language has its own strength. She sees language as a medium and by recognizing different self’s in her three languages, she makes the most of them. She is currently exploring the weakness of her body as a medium, considering the inner as a tool, and is finally coming out of the closet as a musician.

8. Rowan Crerar – before and now

Using field recordings of ambient, liminal spaces this piece encourages the consideration of silence as an element of sound. Using basic looping the piece traps a listener in a cycle of sounds, close to silence and simultaneously deafeningly loud – incorporating ideas of dead air, active listening, and soundscapes modern and traditional. The piece was created to be played through the medium of broadcast – to incorporate the ambient sounds that also surround a listener as they listen to the piece; a clock ticking next to them or the wind outside immerses itself into the noises of another time and place.

Rowan Crerar is a 3rd year student at Edinburgh College of Art, studying Intermedia. Her practice centres in the ambience of city spaces and she works mainly in audio and video. She runs a show on Freshair.org.uk, and considers the idea of broadcast an integral part of her developing practice.

9. Vincent Eoppolo – The Metamorphosis

2 track fixed media acousmatic music composition realized in 2018. Created using various techniques and technologies such as analogue modular, FM and granular synthesis as well as field recordings. Recorded in my studio Eclisse.

My compositions are a synthesis of various sound art traditions such as musique concrete, acousmatic music, electro-acoustic music and radio art. My works have been presented at the New York City Electro-Acoustic Music Festival, the Bushwick Open Studio Festival in Brooklyn and at Utopie Sonore in Torcé-en-Vallée, France. Several compositions have been featured on RTE’s Lyric FM in Ireland, on Radiophrenia in Glasgow, Phaune Radio from Montpellier, France as well as Radio Art International and Passport International on CHOQ Radio in Montreal, Canada. Jumbled Airs #1 is a new sound work synthesising wind, water, ecstatic pylons, breathy bodily systems, broken narrations, bowed objects and DIY aeolian harps into a transient song of confused communicative air currents. Inspired by the distanced intimacies of radio transmission, as well as its underlying potentials for disturbance/resistance, destabilized acts of breathing, speaking, addressing and sounding are combined with the physical resonance of objects and elements to point towards a reclaiming of the materialities of sonic exchange based in transient bodies, thoughts, gestures and places.

OOR_Scintilla (Louisa Love & Clive McLachlan Powell) are a recently formed Edinburgh-based collaborative artist duo working experimentally across sound, music, performance and installation practices. Combining our interests in the material poetics of sound, voice and place, we together produce sound works, site-responsive installations and informal performances which consider interactions between aural and material culture. Our

this piece includes field recordings made in street markets in Berlin, Sao Paulo, Catania (Sicily), Pekin and Tel-Aviv. The composition process focused mainly on the deconstruction and re-arrangement of the many vocal utterances produced by the stallholders. This kaleidoscopic conglomeration of stallholders voices gave birth to a fictional street market that is beyond the reality found in the original recordings. The work title refers to the music style and technique that inspired both the concept of this piece and the main approach used for the treatment of the sound materials.

Mario Verandi is an argentinean born composer and sound artist. He studied music in Argentina and in Barcelona. He continued his studies at the University of Birmingham (UK) where he completed a doctorate in electroacoustic music composition, In 2000 he moved to Berlin as a guest of the Artists-in Berlin program of the German Academic Exchange Service. Verandis´works include electroacoustic pieces, sound and video installations, live sound performances as well as radio art pieces. Olivia Furey is currently a second year student of the MFA in Contemporary Art Practice at Edinburgh College of Art. Her most recent works have included performances that are heavily interactive with audience members that explore the feeling of safety when being and audience member in comparison to the feeling of safety as a performer. In these performances, Olivia takes on several different personas that touch on a variety of different issues relating to politics, society and contemporary culture. A recent introduction to the performances has been sound work that Olivia incorporates with instruments she has invented and found objects.

Her records encompass the dual worlds of intelligent avant-garde and contemporary electronic music, drawing in influences from her academic background as a civil engineer as well as musics and philosophies from across the world. Jérôme Noetinger discovered experimental music under the influence of the Déficit Des Années Antérieures in Caen and studied electroacoustic music under the direction of Xavier Garcia from 1986 -1988 at COREAM in Fontaine. He was a member of 102 rue d’Alembert, programming coordinator of exhibitions, concerts and experimental cinema from 1989 -1998. From 1987 to 2018, he was director of Metamkine, non-profit organisation dedicated to the distribution of improvised and electroacoustic music, which operates with an on-line mail order catalogue. He was also member of editorial committee of quarterly journal of contemporary sound, poetry and performance, Revue & Corrigée since 1987.

He is a composer (musique concrete in the studio) and improviser working with electroacoustic devices such as: the reel to reel tape recorder Revox B77 and magnetic tape, analogue synthesisers, mixing desks, speakers, microphones, various electronic household objects and home-made electronica. Active in the international music network since 1987, he is performing both solo and in ensembles, and collaborating often, and touring extensively internationally working with music, dance, films and painting.

Aoi Swimming – I lost my baby teeth

This song is a result of the “teeth” themed workshop with children from elementary school of Taiwan, during the artist in residence at Soulangh Artist Village in 2016. The reason why Aoi has chosen the “teeth” theme is that the Soulangh warehouse was used for storing sugar in a history and the sugar is associated with bad teeth. Aoi has taken ideas of children’s lyrics into the original song.Aoi sings a song in chinese, and the meaning of lyric is that children say goodbye to the lost teeth and want to put fruits, ice cream and beans into gum.

Aoi Swimming is an idiosyncratic singer-songwriter and performance artist playing toy keyboards. With a pinpoint power and a huge sense of humor she places socio-political critique in the minds of listeners. One of her track is showing as a part of sound installation of Mischa Kuball “res•o•nant” at Jewish Museum in Berlin. For London Design Festival in 2015, her track was selected for the “Listening room” at Vitsoe in Central London, curated by The WIRE. Recent Live Performance include; Mousonturm in Frankfurt, 182 Art Space in Tainan, Bürgerhaus Glockenbachwerkstatt in Munich, and TA LÄRM” Poelzig Areal in Chemnitz.

This episode of NRRF B Radio finds our fearless space pirates in a real pickle. The Snow Pod used to Escape to Snowland has melted upon launch due to a bad calculation involving a floating point decimal number. As the pirates fall back to the surface of the Forbidden Planet, they notice what appear to be creatures resembling marshmallows playing musical instruments. While falling, they speculate on what this strange music might sound like and use their space radios to see if there are any readable frequencies. Will the pirates be able to tune in? Will they land softly?

NRRF B Radio is a collaborative effort to make unlicensed neighborhood radio art and manifests as a series of radio shows mashing b-list genres with radio art. Each B Radio episode features a theme to structure the improvisational nature of the shows, though tangents are frequent and encouraged. The performers sample wildly, speculate broadly, and even sometimes sing. This 2019 international iteration features a core group of noisemakers consisting of Jonny Farrow, Anna Friz, Steve Germana, Jeff Kolar, Jessica Speer, and Peter Speer. Earlier projects include a series of unlicensed low power FM broadcasts from Chicago and beyond (2012-14).

After centuries of submersion ‘Smokey’ emerges onto the foreshore to communicate with us through sounds he has collected from past peoples. Characterising the sounds and histories of London using the earth and artefacts born from it. The sound piece combines river Thames foreshore field recordings with ceramic costume (constructed using porcelain smoking pipes dating between the late 1500 to late 1800s), Ceramic whistle/ocarina (made form river band thames clay), a wooden bull roarer or wind wand (modelled from European palaeolithic/Mesolithic examples), whirly wands and thunder drums.

Ashleigh Fisk is a multimedia artist currently investigating the use of ceramics to create sound and instruments, much of her inspiration steaming from ceramic artefacts found while Mudlarking on the Thames foreshore. Her work concerns the ‘All Man’, revealing the universal experience of inhabiting a body; both inanimate and animate.

Adam Paroussos is a sound artist, performer and composer who often performs as ‘Bamboo Mustard’, which involves self made instruments, spontaneous group improvisation and sonic narratives created from natural material. He produces the improvised event ‘Crossspace’ at DIY space for London and is part of the collective ‘Sound Writing Kollab’.

Daniel Padden – Known Plates

Known Plates is performed using tape machines, reed organs, toy pianos, live and recorded voice, bass clarinet and percussion to create a shifting improvisation.
The instruments and objects are placed around the space, and the performer moves between them, following his own physical score within the music.

Daniel Padden is a musician and composer living in Edinburgh. He mostly creates work for theatre, screen and live performance. He is the founder member of The One Ensemble, and a member of Volcano The Bear.

We are Archivosonoro (Soundarchive) from Chiapas, Mexico. The team are Gabriela Guadalupe Barrios García and Carlos Emilio Ruiz Llaven. Las latas de Don Renato (Don Renato’s Thin Cans), is about short stories (1 minute long) tell told only with sounds, no talk, no spoken word in any language. Don Renato (fictional character) is an old man who likes to collect sounds and keep in cans… so share with us your collection with many many cans.

3. Mark Hume & Bruce McClure – Joshua Free

George Albaster is a concept. He is a 1980s teen avant-garde turned mainstream horror movie star from Fenwick, Ayr. George catapulted into the mainstream after appearing in the 80s/90s hit trilogy “Atheist Cop”, famous for its controversy surrounding holy war. Excessive drug use and failed rehabilitation attempts ensued. Before he knew it he was watching Marlon Brando’s daughter throw herself from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Following a 4 year disappearance, he returned to write and direct the acclaimed Netflix TV series “People of the Canyons”, now in its seventh season. The interview that Radiophrenia aired last year contained George’s confession of “The Lost Years” – a self inflicted hiatus spent away from the media limelight, during which George fell within himself, tackling his own demons whilst recording his thoughts. These are some of those recordings, against a backdrop of the droning noise George’s own mind reverberates in an infinite-delay feedback loop.

George Alabaster was imagined by long standing friends Bruce McClure (District Nurse, Seed Records) and Mark Hume (Autocrat, Mark Zoom). The chain of thought prose was recorded in early 2019 near Joshua Tree, California where Bruce spent time with Bill Pulman’s daughter. The remainder of George’s thoughts will be contained in a free cassette, sellotaped to the comic book series of Atheist Cop (created by independent artist Doktor Geraldo (Comixcentral)).

4. Lorenzo Cimino – addio copia

Lorenzo Cimino is an Italian trumpet player and composer. He has taught at the University of Pisa , Conservatory of Bologna, Istituto Boccherini Lucca.He made numerous recordings on behalf of Rai and won the audition for the first trumpet in the orchestra of the Fermo Festival. He has carried out an intense concert activity, founding and working for ten years the Ensemble Giacinto Scelsi, also performing numerous compositions in the first absolute performance, many composers have dedicated pieces to his trumpet On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Dadaism he plays and writes the music of the Performance “WiTz”, the only Italian project awarded by the Dada 100 Foundation in Zurich

A live improvised set between between Stephanie Merchak and Nour Sokhon in collaboration with Nicole Farah. “Transformation Through Chaos II” invites the audience to lose their inhibitions and self reflect on their personal experiences with disorder within the age of disinformation/ information overload. Sound and body are used as vehicles, encouraging the crowd to converse with their innerselves.

Nour Sokhon is a Lebanese artist, sound designer and filmmaker based in Beirut, Lebanon. Her creative explorations have been in the form of sound performances, installations and moving images. In 2017 she culminated a large scale Masters project; a documentary entitled “People on Sound”, during her time at the Glasgow School of Art in the United Kingdom. “Revisiting: Hold Your Breath” is her most recent moving image piece, which recently won the Emerging Artist Prize at the Sursock Museum as a part of the 33rd Salon d’Automne at the Sursock Museum.

With an academic background and technical expertise in music going back decades, Stephanie Merchak’s first endeavors into the realm of electronic music came in the early 2000s. She has been working on bringing out her own touch of experimentalism, releasing music independently and on labels (Lebanon, France, UK, US, Canada) and performing in Lebanon (the Basement, Minimal Effort, BBX, Dawawine, Frequent Defect, Tota, Mansion, HNGR, Riwaq). Her music has been featured on radio shows and mixes. Stephanie is also a freelance sound editor, composer and sound designer who has worked for more than 10 years in studios in Beirut.

Pink and Blue is composed of a recorded interview that was conducted with Angela Davis in 1971. The voice of the interviewer was removed, leaving only the responses by Angela Davis. These responses were processed with a delay effect. This act of removing created gaps that were replaced with five seconds of pink noise, a random noise having equal energy per octave. The word pink also references Baker-Miller Pink that was used in prisons in the 70’s, to control and oppress inmates. Interweaving within these tracks are processed samples from, “Grinnin’ in Your Face”, a blues song by Son House.

David Schafer is an artist who works with audio, installation, sculpture, performance, and works on paper. Often originating from literary, historical, or theoretical sources, his interventions are driven by an interest in cultural memory, and the structures of language and built space. Schafer has performed at a variety of venues including Human Resources, Silent Barn, Roulette, Invisible Dog, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and has been included in curated radio programs in Lisbon, Paris, and Berlin.

The material for this piece comes from a sonic analysis of the variable star HR 1217, using a technique where the changes in the light spectrum of an object recorded over a period of time can be translated into sound by raising the frequencies up to the range of human hearing. The slow changes in colour and consonance focus the listener constantly on the foreground, in the “mysterious power of the infinitesimal” (Eliane Radigue).

David Thomas Duncan is a composer and pianist, currently working at the London College of Music. He is interested in repetition and memory.
